A monkey entered a grid station in Sri Lanka, leading to a nationwide power outage.
According to the French news agency AFP, Sri Lankan authorities reported that the incident occurred at 11 AM on Sunday when a monkey entered the grid station, disrupting the electricity supply. Even after three hours, power was not fully restored.
Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody stated that a monkey collided with a transformer at the grid station, which caused the power system to be affected. The incident took place in the suburbs of southern Colombo.
He further mentioned that while power has been restored in some areas, it remains unclear how long the load shedding will last.
The Minister of Energy added that engineers are working to restore the electricity supply as soon as possible.
Previously, in 2022, Sri Lanka experienced months-long power outages during a severe economic crisis. Fuel shortages at petrol stations led to electricity being supplied for only 13 hours a day.
