A replica of the FIFA World Cup trophy lifted by Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi after Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph is set to go under the hammer in November.
Organised by Richmond Auctions, the commemorative replica will feature in the auction house’s first sports memorabilia auction, scheduled for November 7, 2026.
The trophy is the same replica held aloft by Argentina’s players during celebrations following their World Cup victory in Qatar. It was later displayed at the National Historical Museum in Buenos Aires.
Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup final against France on December 18 at Lusail Stadium. The match ended 3-3 after extra time before Argentina secured a 4-2 victory in the penalty shootout. Messi scored twice, while France’s Kylian Mbappe netted a hat-trick.
One of the replica’s notable features is the signatures of eight members of Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad.
Messi’s iconic photograph holding the World Cup trophy also became a social media sensation. The Instagram post received more than 74 million likes, making it one of the platform’s most popular posts.
Online bidders will also have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming auction and bid for the football memorabilia item.
