KARACHI: Mera Lyari, a film produced under the Government of Sindh, has entered the race for Pakistan’s submission to the Academy Awards (Oscars), marking a significant development for the country’s film industry.
Sindh government officials said they hope the film will secure an official Oscar nomination, describing the achievement as a potential milestone for Pakistani cinema if selected.
Film Board Reviews Industry Progress
The update was shared during a meeting of the Sindh Information Department’s Film Board, chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon.
The meeting reviewed the province’s ongoing film projects, strategies for strengthening the local film industry, and opportunities for collaboration with national and international OTT platforms for film distribution and streaming.
Government Highlights Support for Creative Industries
Officials informed the meeting that the first phase of the Information Department’s film initiatives has been successfully completed, while discussions with OTT platforms and other stakeholders regarding the distribution and exhibition of films are continuing.
Sharjeel Inam Memon said the Sindh government is committed to promoting the film industry, culture, and creative sectors through sustained policy support and investment.
Focus on Global Recognition
The senior minister said the film industry plays an important role in showcasing Pakistan’s cultural heritage, creating employment opportunities, attracting investment, and encouraging creative talent.
He added that the government’s objective is to develop Sindh into a modern filmmaking hub where local filmmakers and artists can compete and gain recognition on international platforms.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Information Kashif Gulzar Sheikh, Director General Information Moez Pirzada, Director Films Hizbullah Memon, members of the Film Board, and other officials, who also discussed future film projects and proposals to strengthen the creative industry.
