TIMERGARA: Medical experts have raised an alarm over the growing number of mental health cases in Pakistan, calling for urgent public awareness and government intervention. Speaking at a seminar held at Timergara Teaching Hospital in connection with World Mental Health Day, psychiatrists and neurologists emphasized the need for early diagnosis and treatment to prevent long-term complications.
The seminar was organized in collaboration with Genetics Pharma and featured leading voices in mental health, including Professor Dr. Samiul Haq (Timergara Teaching Hospital), Dr. Aizaz Jamal (Bacha Khan Medical Complex Mardan), Dr. Akbar Khan (Timergara Teaching Hospital), Dr. Saeed Khan (Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar), Dr. Munawar Khan (Neuro Physician), and Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad (Psychiatrist).
According to the World Federation for Mental Health, nearly 1 billion people globally suffer from mental disorders—a number that continues to rise. In Pakistan, experts estimate that 20 to 25 percent of the population is affected by psychological and psychiatric conditions. The causes range from inflation, unemployment, and natural disasters to domestic conflicts and business losses. In severe cases, untreated mental illness may lead to suicidal behavior.
Speakers stressed that mental illnesses are treatable if diagnosed early and urged patients to seek help from qualified professionals. They also highlighted that epilepsy, often misunderstood, is a manageable condition with proper care.
A key concern raised during the seminar was the absence of a dedicated psychiatry ward at Timergara Teaching Hospital. Experts called on the provincial government to establish one immediately, noting that the region’s rising mental health cases demand structured and accessible care.
The session concluded with a renewed call for public education, institutional support, and community engagement to address the mental health crisis. As Pakistan observes World Mental Health Day, the voices from Timergara underscore a national imperative: to treat mental health with the urgency, dignity, and resources it deserves.
