French superstar Kylian Mbappe and Norwegian striker Erling Haaland rewrote UEFA Champions League history on Wednesday, breaking two records previously held by Lionel Messi.
Real Madrid forward Mbappe became the youngest player to make 100 Champions League appearances during his team’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Roma on October 14.
Mbappe reached the milestone at 27 years and 298 days, surpassing Messi, who made his 100th appearance at 28 years and 84 days. Coincidentally, both players achieved the milestone against Roma.
Mbappe also scored during the match, taking his Champions League goal tally to 72 and moving ahead of Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez on the competition’s all-time scoring list.
Meanwhile, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland broke another of Messi’s records by becoming the fastest player to score 60 goals in the Champions League.
Haaland reached the milestone in just 60 appearances, compared with Messi’s previous record of 80 matches. The Norwegian forward scored twice against Paris Saint-Germain, taking his overall Champions League tally to 61 goals in 60 games.
Haaland also became the youngest player to reach 60 goals in the competition, achieving the feat at 26 years and 85 days—one day younger than Messi was when he reached the same milestone.
Despite Haaland’s brace, Manchester City suffered a 4-2 defeat against PSG, making the night a record-breaking one for the Norwegian striker but a disappointing result for his team.
