Mazar-e-Quaid to Welcome Visitors Again After Three-Year Closure

Authorities have decided to reopen Mazar-e-Quaid to the public after it remained closed for nearly three years due to security concerns, according to discussions held during a meeting of the Senate Subcommittee on National Heritage and Culture.

The decision follows consultations with the Karachi commissioner and other relevant authorities, who agreed to restore public access under revised security protocols.

Senate committee reviews security and maintenance

The Senate subcommittee, chaired by Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi, reviewed administrative, financial, security, cleanliness, and development matters related to Mazar-e-Quaid and its surrounding areas.

During the meeting, the committee discussed measures aimed at improving public access while maintaining security at the national monument.

Public access to resume under security protocol

Senator Waqar Mehdi said Mazar-e-Quaid had remained closed to the general public for the past three years due to security concerns.

He said consultations with local authorities resulted in a decision to reopen the mausoleum while implementing appropriate security arrangements for visitors.

Committee seeks improved facilities

The committee also highlighted the deteriorating condition of the boundary fence and surrounding infrastructure.

It recommended installing surveillance cameras to improve security and suggested reviewing the fees charged for using the adjacent ground for political gatherings and public events.

Call for greater financial support

Senator Waqar Mehdi said the Rs20 million allocated annually by the Sindh government was insufficient to meet the maintenance and operational needs of Mazar-e-Quaid.

Describing the mausoleum as a national heritage site, he urged all provincial governments to contribute to its preservation.

The committee also announced that it would recommend a special federal grant for Mazar-e-Quaid and forward its recommendations to all provincial chief ministers.
