FAISALABAD: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is set to unveil the 21.3-kilometre Orange Line Metro/Tram project in Faisalabad after Eid, with groundbreaking expected immediately afterward, officials said.
The Rs80 billion mass transit project will run from Faisal Town on Jaranwala Road to Tahir Pura on Jhang Road and is aimed at improving urban mobility for thousands of daily commuters in the city.
The update was shared during a high-level review meeting chaired by Punjab Mass Transit Authority member and former chief secretary Capt (Retd) Zahid Saeed, along with Divisional Commissioner Raja Jahangir Anwar. Officials confirmed that the project’s PC-I has been approved.
According to the briefing, the Orange Line will include 21 stations, two depots and six U-turns. The system is planned to operate with 27 metro buses and two trams.
Utility relocation and traffic management
Zahid Saeed directed departments including WASA, FESCO, Sui Gas, Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), Municipal Corporation, Traffic Police and PTCL to complete surveys and submit demand notices within 10 days for relocation of utility services along the approved route.
He also called for a comprehensive traffic diversion plan to ensure smooth flow of vehicles during the construction phase.
Officials said safety compliance would be strictly enforced at construction sites. The Project Management Unit has appointed a health and safety officer to monitor standards, with particular emphasis on safe excavation practices.
Measures to reduce public inconvenience
Authorities said steps would be taken to minimise disruption for residents and commuters during construction. These include regular water sprinkling to control dust, installation of lighting and signboards, and relocation of trees using modern techniques without cutting them.
