Islamabad — Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf has said that Pakistan must adopt a comprehensive maritime strategy to address emerging challenges in the Indian Ocean Region and to better utilise its blue economy potential. He made the remarks in a message issued for the eighth Maritime Security Workshop (MARSEW-8), being held at the Pakistan Navy War College in Lahore.
MARSEW brings together policymakers and maritime stakeholders
According to the statement, MARSEW brings together government officials, representatives from the armed forces, business leaders, academics, entrepreneurs and media professionals. The workshop aims to promote awareness of Pakistan’s maritime sector and support policy discussions at the national level.
Navy chief links Pakistan’s economic future to maritime resources
Admiral Ashraf said Pakistan’s location along a key sea line of communication in the Indian Ocean Region gives it significant maritime relevance. He noted that while Pakistan possesses substantial maritime resources, much of this potential remains underutilised.
He added that the blue economy contributes only a small share to GDP, despite having the capacity to generate far higher economic returns if managed effectively.
Call for a coordinated maritime strategy under MARSEW-8
The naval chief emphasised that developments in the Indian Ocean Region directly affect Pakistan’s maritime security. To respond effectively, he said Pakistan needs a coordinated maritime strategy that supports both security requirements and economic goals.
He noted that MARSEW-8 provides a platform for participants to exchange views and discuss practical approaches to maritime governance, resource development and security planning.
