Islamabad — President Asif Ali Zardari has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to comprehensive maritime sector reforms, calling the maritime domain a cornerstone of national trade, connectivity, and economic resilience.
In his official message marking the International Day of Maritime Trade, the President emphasized that Pakistan stands at a defining moment in its maritime journey. “Our seas are not only gateways for trade but also pillars of national growth and global engagement,” he stated.
To transform Pakistan into a competitive maritime nation, the government is implementing wide-ranging maritime sector reforms in Pakistan. These include port upgradation, infrastructure development, digitization, and capacity enhancement. Consequently, the goal is to align Pakistan’s maritime operations with international standards and best practices.
In addition, several maritime policies are under review to uplift the entire sector. The government plans to offer special incentives to Pakistani shipping companies. These measures aim to reduce reliance on foreign carriers, improve freight security, and conserve foreign exchange. Moreover, the reforms will enhance trade facilitation and strengthen Pakistan’s integration into regional and global supply chains.
President Zardari highlighted that customs and trade systems are being modernized through the Pakistan Single Window initiative. Furthermore, authorities have launched a phased Port Community System to digitize port operations and connect stakeholders across the maritime supply chain.
Meanwhile, Karachi Port and Port Qasim are undergoing major upgrades. These improvements will help manage rising cargo volumes and position both ports as regional trade hubs. Notably, the developments form part of a coherent national strategy that promotes global compliance and protects Pakistan’s long-term economic interests.
“These reforms are not isolated,” the President said. “They reflect our unity of purpose and commitment to excellence. Pakistan’s maritime future is bright, ambitious, and sustainable.”
He concluded by urging continued hard work and policy innovation. According to him, building a strong maritime future requires collective effort, strategic planning, and consistent execution. As Pakistan moves forward, its maritime sector will play a vital role in driving economic growth and regional connectivity.
