Madyan Hydropower Project Meeting Highlights Development and Environmental Concerns

SWAT: The Madyan Hydropower Project came under review during a high-level meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Swat, Saleem Jan Marwat. The session focused on environmental protection, community concerns, and development opportunities linked to the project.

The meeting included Additional Deputy Commissioner (Finance & Planning) Syed Nauman Ali Shah, Assistant Commissioner Bahrain Tanzil ur Rahman, Additional Assistant Commissioner Bahrain Ahmad Sher, Tehsildar Bahrain, and representatives of PEDO. Members of the “Save Swat River Movement” and elected leaders from Tehsil Bahrain also attended. A World Bank representative joined via video link, stressing the project’s global importance and potential for sustainable energy.

Participants discussed the Swat River’s environmental challenges, tourism impact, and the effects on local communities. Officials explained an action plan that addresses reservations while promoting energy production, job creation, and regional prosperity through responsible practices.

Deputy Commissioner Saleem Jan Marwat assured participants that the district administration would safeguard public interest. He said the administration is coordinating with all institutions to protect the river’s ecosystem while promoting development. He also promised regular consultation with local communities throughout the project.

PEDO officials expressed their commitment to regional growth and public welfare. They highlighted that the Madyan Hydropower Project will follow modern hydropower practices, integrate community engagement, and apply lessons learned from earlier energy initiatives.

In his address, the Deputy Commissioner said the project will strengthen Pakistan’s energy sector. He added that it will create local jobs, improve infrastructure, and stimulate economic activity in Swat. He noted that youth employment, new business ventures, and tourism development will raise living standards for thousands of families.

Officials concluded that the Madyan Hydropower Project aims to balance ecological care with development goals. They said the project could become a model of sustainable hydropower in Pakistan, blending clean energy production with environmental responsibility.
