English soprano Laura Wright won praise from cricket fans after performing Pakistan’s national anthem ahead of the first Test between Pakistan and England at Headingley on Wednesday.

Wright performed the anthem a cappella, without musical accompaniment, as spectators at the stadium listened. Her rendition received warm applause from the crowd.

The occasion was also significant for England, with Joe Root beginning his second stint as the team’s permanent Test captain.

On the field, England’s bowlers dominated Pakistan’s first innings, dismissing the visitors for 171 runs. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue claimed five wickets each.
