Countries with the largest oil reserves in 2026: Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and Iran top global list

Global energy data shows that a handful of nations continue to control most of the world’s proven crude resources, with Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and Iran leading the list of countries with the largest oil reserves in 2026.

According to widely cited international energy datasets, Venezuela holds the world’s biggest proven oil reserves, estimated at about 303 billion barrels. Saudi Arabia ranks second with roughly 267 billion barrels, followed by Iran with more than 200 billion barrels. These reserves represent oil that can be commercially extracted using existing technology and economic conditions.

The distribution of oil reserves remains a major factor in global energy markets, influencing production capacity, export flows and geopolitical dynamics.

Top countries by proven oil reserves

Venezuela’s vast reserves are largely located in the Orinoco Belt, a region known for heavy crude deposits. Saudi Arabia and Iran also possess extensive reserves that support their roles as major oil exporters and influential energy producers.

Canada ranks fourth globally with approximately 163 billion barrels, much of it contained in the Alberta oil sands. Iraq follows with around 145 billion barrels, making it one of the largest oil reserve holders in the Middle East.

Other major reserve holders include the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Russia, all of which maintain significant roles in global energy production.

Middle East holds a large share of global reserves

A large portion of the world’s proven oil reserves is concentrated in the Middle East. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait collectively control a significant share of global crude resources.

This concentration has long made the region central to global energy supply and oil market stability.

Outside the Middle East, Venezuela in South America and Canada in North America remain among the largest reserve holders, while Russia also maintains substantial reserves that support its energy sector.
