LAHORE: The Lahore Traffic Police has organised a rickshaw driving training programme to empower women and provide them with dignified employment opportunities, training 34 women in collaboration with a private university.
The initiative was launched on the special instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, with the aim of promoting women’s empowerment, economic independence and access to new livelihood opportunities.
Under the programme, women received rickshaw driving training at the driving schools in Bahria Town and Manawan.
Chief Traffic Officer Lahore Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi said the primary objective of the initiative was to enable women to earn a respectable living. After completing their training, participants will be able to drive rickshaws and generate their own income.
He added that the programme was not limited to teaching driving skills but was also designed to help women become financially independent and lead self-reliant lives.
Shirazi emphasised that women’s participation alongside men was essential for social and economic development. He said empowering women could bring meaningful change to society and reaffirmed that Lahore Traffic Police would continue working to promote women’s independence, dignified employment and financial stability.
According to the report, Lahore has already established 12 car and scooter driving schools for women. More than 16,000 women have received car and scooter driving training through these facilities.
The rickshaw driving programme is an extension of these efforts, aimed at expanding employment opportunities and helping more women achieve economic self-sufficiency.
