PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday discussed the province’s worsening security situation, political developments and issues linked to the ongoing long march, with the possibility of Governor’s Rule or an emergency also coming under consideration.
The meeting at Governor House reviewed concerns over law and order in KP and the political situation arising from the march, according to an official statement.
Participants expressed concern that terrorists could potentially exploit the movement of people during the long march to cross security checkpoints.
The meeting also criticised the provincial government’s role during recent negotiations, alleging that its approach to counter-terrorism matters was against the interests of the province and its people.
According to the statement, the participants said that despite broad agreement on resolving issues, the provincial government had shown rigidity and repeatedly reversed its position.
They also discussed the alleged use of helicopters and other government resources by the KP chief minister and provincial ministers during the long march, describing such use as being in violation of Islamabad High Court decisions.
The two sides held consultations on other matters of mutual interest and reviewed possible steps in response to the developing political and security situation.
The meeting agreed that if the President and Prime Minister considered it necessary to impose Governor’s Rule or declare an emergency to protect the province from terrorism and instability, Governor House would perform its constitutional role accordingly.
The discussion comes amid rising tensions between the federal and provincial governments over the long march and the deteriorating security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
