Islamabad — A new Kaspersky survey has found that 83% of employees in the Middle East, Türkiye and Africa (META) region remain connected to work during their time off, highlighting growing concerns around digital anxiety and workplace stress. The findings indicate that constant connectivity is becoming a defining feature of modern work culture, with employees frequently checking messages and emails outside office hours. Experts warn that this trend not only affects well-being but may also increase cybersecurity risks.According to the survey, 85% of respondents said they respond to work-related messages on instant messaging apps even during their personal time, while the same percentage reported checking work emails outside working hours. Additionally, 81% admitted to replying to emails during vacations.

The data suggests that many employees feel pressure to remain available, blurring the boundaries between work and personal life. The survey also highlighted stress linked to everyday digital interactions. Around 43% of respondents said they experienced anxiety after sending an incorrect or unintended message in a work chat.At the same time, 40% said they remained relatively calm after sending an unfinished email, indicating varying perceptions of digital mistakes. Meanwhile, 36% reported feeling uncomfortable or anxious if noticed using social media during work hours.
Kaspersky officials noted that constant urgency in responding to messages can lead to impulsive actions, increasing exposure to phishing and social engineering attacks.“Digital anxiety doesn’t just affect employee well-being — it can also increase cybersecurity risks,” said Brandon Muller, a technical expert at Kaspersky, adding that employees under pressure are more likely to overlook warning signs in emails or links.Cybersecurity expert Muhammad Asad Ul Rehman said the findings reflect trends increasingly visible in Pakistan, where rapid digital adoption is changing workplace behaviour.
He noted that continuous connectivity can lead to poor decision-making and higher vulnerability to cyber threats, stressing the need for stronger cybersecurity awareness at both organisational and individual levels.Kaspersky has advised employees to verify unexpected requests, avoid acting under pressure, and remain cautious when dealing with emails or links. The company also recommended that organisations invest in regular cybersecurity training and adopt protective technologies to reduce risks.
