Karachi’s Changing Weather: How to Stay Healthy

Changing weather conditions, with warm days and cooler nights, are contributing to complaints of colds, coughs, sore throats and throat dryness among Karachi residents. Health experts are advising people to take precautions against temperature fluctuations and air pollution.

Children, older adults and people with pre-existing medical conditions have been advised to take particular care during this seasonal transition.

Speaking on ARY News’ programme Ba Khabar Savera, health practitioner Hakim Amjad Ismail said Karachi was experiencing a weather pattern in which daytime temperatures remained warm while nights became cooler, requiring the body to adjust to changing conditions.

He said symptoms such as colds, coughs and throat irritation were common during seasonal changes. Dust and air pollution were additional concerns for residents, particularly those with heart and respiratory conditions.

According to Ismail, people with cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses should exercise extra caution during such weather. He also noted that some people may experience an increase in heart and circulation-related problems during colder conditions.

Stay Hydrated Despite Cooler Weather

Ismail advised residents not to reduce their water intake simply because the weather had become cooler. People often feel less thirsty in dry or cold conditions, which can lead to inadequate fluid consumption.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring that children and older adults drink water regularly, as reduced intake may contribute to dehydration.

He also noted that some people experience increased urination during colder weather, making adequate fluid intake particularly important.

Warm Soups and Drinks

The health practitioner recommended soups, broths and warm beverages as options during the seasonal transition. He also suggested mint and ginger infusions.

For children, he mentioned honey-based drinks containing cloves and cinnamon. However, honey should never be given to infants under one year of age.

Ismail suggested that people who tolerate broth could consume approximately half a cup to one cup daily, depending on their individual needs and health conditions.

Advice on Tea and Green Tea

Ismail also advised moderation in tea consumption, highlighting the caffeine content and the way tea is prepared. He cautioned against drinking tea immediately after meals and said combining tea with smoking could pose additional health concerns.

He further advised people to be cautious with green tea, particularly if they were experiencing symptoms such as dry lips or throat dryness. He suggested that fennel and cardamom could be added to green tea, although the report did not provide scientific evidence establishing that these ingredients counteract its effects.

Take Precautions Against Weather Changes

The advice comes as residents face changing temperatures alongside dust and air pollution. Maintaining adequate hydration, limiting exposure to polluted air when levels are high and taking extra care of vulnerable family members can help people manage seasonal changes.

People with persistent symptoms or existing heart and respiratory conditions should seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional rather than relying solely on home remedies.
