The Sindh government is finalizing new routes for double-decker and electric buses in Karachi as another batch of vehicles is expected to arrive in November, marking a further expansion of the city’s public transport network.

Sindh Senior Minister for Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon shared the development during a departmental meeting, directing officials to complete route planning and necessary infrastructure arrangements before the new buses begin operations.

New bus routes to connect underserved areas

The proposed routes will cover major roads, commercial centres, educational institutions and residential neighbourhoods across Karachi.

According to the transport department, priority will be given to areas where residents face limited public transport options, with the aim of improving connectivity and providing more convenient travel facilities.

Officials have been instructed to finalize charging stations, bus depots, designated stops, technical requirements and operational plans ahead of the fleet’s deployment.

Double-decker and EV buses expected in November

Sharjeel Inam Memon said another batch of double-decker and electric buses is expected to reach Karachi during November 2026.

The expansion forms part of the provincial government’s efforts to strengthen public transport, introduce higher-capacity vehicles and increase the use of environmentally friendly electric buses.

Double-decker buses could accommodate more passengers on heavily travelled corridors, while additional electric buses would expand Karachi’s existing electric public transport network.

When will the new buses start operating?

Although preparations are underway, the Sindh government has not yet announced the final routes or confirmed when the new buses will enter passenger service.

The actual benefits for commuters will depend on route selection, service frequency and the completion of supporting infrastructure.

The planned expansion is expected to provide additional travel options for residents, particularly in neighbourhoods currently underserved by public transport.
