Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab joined residents of Lyari to watch the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, highlighting the area’s long-standing connection with football and its contribution to the sport in Pakistan.
The gathering brought together local football enthusiasts and community members, with the mayor watching the match alongside residents in one of the country’s most prominent football hubs.
Lyari’s Football Legacy Highlighted
Speaking on the occasion, Murtaza Wahab described Lyari as Pakistan’s historic center of football, noting that the area has produced numerous talented players who have represented the sport at various levels.
He said football remains deeply rooted in the local community and continues to be a source of pride for residents.
Focus on Sports Infrastructure
The mayor said efforts are underway to improve sports facilities across Karachi and provide better opportunities for young athletes.
According to Wahab, modern sports infrastructure is being developed in line with the vision of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, with the aim of promoting healthy activities and supporting emerging talent.

Wahab said the city administration is working to expand access to sports and recreational facilities for young people.
