The Board of Secondary Education Karachi has introduced a new grading system for matriculation examinations, bringing a significant change to how students are assessed under the city’s largest examination board.

According to Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK), the revised grading framework will be implemented from the ongoing academic year for Class 9 students. Class 10 candidates will be evaluated under the new system starting in 2027. The minimum passing requirement has been set at 40 percent.

Under the new policy, the traditional “fail” status has been replaced with a “U grade.” Students scoring below 40 percent will be placed in this category, while only those securing 40 percent or above will be declared successful.

New grading structure and GPA introduction

As part of the updated grading system, students achieving between 96 and 100 percent marks will receive an A++ grade. The board said the changes are aimed at standardising assessment practices and improving clarity in student performance reporting.

BSEK has also decided to introduce a Grade Point Average (GPA) system on an interim basis. Students who do not meet the minimum passing criteria will be required to appear in supplementary examinations.

Education officials said the new grading and GPA framework is expected to gradually replace the traditional marks-based evaluation system, aligning Karachi’s matric assessment with modern academic practices.
