Junaid Khan suggests break for Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah to address weaknesses

Former Pakistan fast bowler Junaid Khan has suggested that pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah should take a break from international cricket to focus on correcting technical weaknesses and regaining peak form.

Speaking about Pakistan’s fast-bowling attack, Junaid said both bowlers have been playing continuously across formats and leagues, which may have affected their performance and rhythm. He suggested that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should consider resting them for around one and a half to two months so they can work on their fitness, bowling rhythm and technical flaws.

The comments come at a time when Pakistan’s bowling unit, traditionally considered the team’s strongest department, has faced scrutiny following inconsistent performances in recent international matches.

Junaid Khan calls for rest for Pakistan’s leading pacers

Junaid Khan said a temporary break could help both players regain form and sharpen their skills.

According to him, modern cricket schedules are extremely demanding, with players frequently switching between international fixtures and franchise leagues. Such workloads can affect pace bowlers in particular, who require proper recovery and technical work.

He suggested that a short period away from competitive matches would allow Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah to work with coaches on their weaknesses and return stronger for upcoming international tournaments.

Shaheen Afridi’s World Cup performance

Shaheen Shah Afridi has been one of Pakistan’s most successful bowlers in recent ICC tournaments.

In the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Shaheen finished as Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker, claiming 18 wickets in nine matches. His performances included several key breakthroughs with the new ball.

Since making his international debut in 2018, Shaheen has become the spearhead of Pakistan’s pace attack across formats. Known for his ability to swing the new ball and generate bounce, he has consistently played a major role in Pakistan’s bowling lineup in ICC events.

Naseem Shah’s role in Pakistan’s pace attack

Naseem Shah, who made his international debut at a young age, has also emerged as an important part of Pakistan’s fast-bowling unit.

Although injuries limited his participation in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, he has delivered notable performances in international cricket and has been particularly effective in ODI matches and major tournaments.

His pace, control and ability to deliver under pressure have made him one of Pakistan’s most promising young fast bowlers.

Importance of workload management

Cricket analysts often highlight the importance of workload management for fast bowlers, especially in a packed international calendar that includes bilateral series, ICC tournaments and franchise leagues.

Experts say proper rest, fitness training and technical adjustments can help bowlers maintain pace, accuracy and consistency over long careers.

With Pakistan expected to compete in several major international events in the coming years, managing the workload of key bowlers such as Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah will remain an important consideration for team management.
