Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who refrained from bowling in the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia due to injury, now faces uncertainty regarding his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy.
Following Australia’s recent tour, Bumrah experienced back pain, which prevented him from bowling during the second innings of the fifth Test in Sydney.
In light of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in February, the Indian Cricket Board is considering giving Bumrah significant rest during the white-ball series against England to ensure his full recovery for the tournament.
According to Indian media reports, Bumrah’s injury status remains unclear, and his participation will depend on medical reports and doctors’ recommendations.
There are also reports suggesting that Bumrah could be appointed as vice-captain for the Indian team in the Champions Trophy. However, if he is unfit, another player may take on the role.
During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah bowled a total of 151.2 overs across five Tests and emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 32 dismissals.
Media reports further indicate that if Bumrah has a Grade 1 injury, his recovery could take 2-3 weeks. A Grade 2 injury may require up to six weeks, while a Grade 3 injury could sideline him for three months.
India is set to play a five-match T20 series against England starting January 22, followed by a three-match ODI series. Bumrah was already expected to rest during the T20 series but was anticipated to participate in the ODI matches to prepare for the Champions Trophy.
It is worth noting that the ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place in Pakistan from February 19, 2025. However, India has decided not to send its team to Pakistan, opting instead to play their matches under a hybrid model.
