LONDON: England fast-bowling legend James Anderson’s professional cricket career has been thrown into uncertainty after Lancashire decided not to offer him a new contract for the upcoming season.

The 44-year-old Anderson was informed of the club’s decision this week. He retired from international cricket in 2024 but continued playing for his county club, Lancashire, and captained the side during the 2026 season.

Anderson produced an impressive campaign this season, taking 50 wickets at an average of 17.68. However, his individual performances Newwere not enough to lift Lancashire to stronger results in the County Championship.

Anderson Wanted to Continue Until 2027

According to reports, Anderson had hoped to continue playing cricket until 2027. Lancashire’s decision not to renew his contract has therefore raised questions over whether he will join another county club or bring his professional career to an end.

Anderson is one of the most successful fast bowlers in cricket history. He took 704 wickets in 188 Test matches for England and established himself as the country’s leading Test wicket-taker and one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time.

His next move will determine whether the veteran paceman gets another opportunity to continue his remarkable career or ends his professional playing days after more than two decades at the highest level.
