LOWER DIR: Jamaat-e-Islami has strongly opposed the imposition of Governor’s Rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing the measures as unjust to the province and harmful to democracy. The party has called for negotiations to resolve the province’s political challenges.
The party’s position was expressed by Syed Bakhtiar Maani, Deputy Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Khyber Pakhtunkhwa North and a former Member of the National Assembly, while addressing a gathering organised by Jamaat-e-Islami Talaash Zone in Lower Dir.
The gathering was held in connection with a referendum to elect the district Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Lower Dir for the 2026–2028 term.
Maani rejected the imposition of Governor’s Rule and emergency measures, saying that although former PTI chief minister Sohail Khan Afridi had, in his view, adopted an ineffective approach to resolving the province’s problems, imposing Governor’s Rule was not the appropriate solution.
He argued that dialogue and negotiations should have been pursued instead. He also said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was facing a critical situation and could not afford further political unrest.
Jamaat-e-Islami Holds District Ameer Referendum
Addressing the gathering, Jamaat-e-Islami Talaash Zone Ameer Maulana Qari Javed Iqbal explained the importance and procedure of the referendum for selecting the district Ameer.
According to the information shared at the meeting, 223 members were eligible to participate in the referendum, and approximately 95 per cent cast their votes. The organisers said the process was conducted in a disciplined manner, reflecting members’ commitment to the party’s organisational activities.
The report also stated that nearly 100,000 people in Talaash Zone had been selected in connection with the ongoing referendum process, although it did not clarify how this figure related to the 223 eligible members.
The referendum is part of the party’s process for selecting its Lower Dir district leadership for the 2026–2028 term.
