ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has fined 48 hospitals and medical centres in Islamabad a total of Rs140.5 million for failing to meet required fire and life-safety standards.
The action followed inspections carried out on August 30 and 31, during which authorities identified shortcomings in fire detection, alarm systems, emergency exits and firefighting arrangements at several healthcare facilities.
Major Hospitals Among Those Penalised
According to the CDA, fines ranging from Rs50,000 to Rs500,000 were imposed for fire safety violations. PIMS, Polyclinic and CDA Hospital were each fined Rs500,000, while another major private hospital also received a Rs500,000 penalty.
The authority said several hospitals had previously been issued notices over safety deficiencies. PIMS had received six notices, Polyclinic seven, CDA Hospital six and the private hospital nine notices.
Further Action Warned
The inspections found deficiencies in fire detection and alarm systems, emergency exits and firefighting equipment. Hospital administrations were directed to bring their facilities into compliance with prescribed fire and life-safety standards.
The CDA has indicated that further action could be taken against institutions that fail to improve their safety arrangements.
