ISLAMABAD — At least 31 people were killed and 169 others injured after a suicide bomber detonated explosives at the entrance of an imambargah in Islamabad’s Tarlai area during Friday prayers, officials said, prompting a major security response and emergency measures at hospitals across the capital.

Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Memon said the attacker blew himself up at the entry gate when security personnel attempted to stop him. Police and security forces sealed off the area to collect evidence as rescue teams shifted the injured to nearby medical facilities.
Emergency protocols were activated at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences and other hospitals, according to officials. State Minister for Interior Tallal Chaudhry visited PIMS to meet those injured in the attack.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the bombing and expressed grief over the loss of life. Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry also denounced the attack and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
Senator Allama Raja Nasir condemned the incident, calling it an assault on worshippers and urging authorities to ensure the safety of places of worship. He also appealed for unity and support for law enforcement agencies.
Authorities said investigations were under way to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack. Casualty figures may be revised as treatment continues and more information becomes available.
