ISLAMABAD, Apr 6 — Islamabad Police has become the first federal department in Pakistan to deploy a fleet of electric vehicles, with BYD supplying new energy vehicles (NEVs) for operational use in the capital.
The induction, carried out in partnership with Mega Motor Company, includes BYD Atto 2 and Sealion 7 models and was inaugurated at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior police officials. The move marks a shift toward electric mobility in public sector operations amid rising fuel costs.
The vehicles will be used for traffic patrol and official duties, with officials stating the transition is expected to reduce fuel dependency, cut operational costs and introduce emission-free mobility into daily policing.
Push toward electric mobility in public sector
Officials said the adoption of electric vehicles reflects efforts to modernise policing infrastructure and improve efficiency while aligning with national goals for sustainable transport.
The initiative also comes as Pakistan faces continued volatility in fuel prices, increasing interest in cost-effective alternatives for high-usage government fleets.
Industry collaboration and future expansion
BYD’s local partner, Mega Motor Company, said the deployment highlights growing confidence in electric vehicles for institutional use, citing benefits such as lower maintenance and improved long-term economics.
Islamabad Police officials indicated the current rollout could lead to further expansion of the electric fleet as part of ongoing modernisation efforts.
