In a strategic push to elevate Islamabad’s hospitality infrastructure, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to fast-track the development of new five-star hotels in the capital. The directive comes as Pakistan gears up to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Conference in 2027 — a high-profile international event expected to draw dignitaries and delegates from across the region.
Convention Centre Expansion Gets the Green Light
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Shaheen Chowk Underpass, where the Prime Minister emphasized the urgency of preparing Islamabad for the upcoming summit. He called on both the CDA and the Interior Ministry to begin immediate work on a new Convention Centre, which will be built adjacent to the existing Jinnah Convention Centre. The expanded facility is expected to serve as a central venue for SCO-related events and gatherings.
Sharif underscored that the construction of luxury hotels is just as critical as the Convention Centre upgrade, noting that high-end accommodations will be essential to host international guests with the level of comfort and prestige the summit demands.
Sector G-5 Tapped for Hotel Development
While specific timelines were not disclosed, a senior CDA official revealed that the government is preparing to launch hotel projects on two prime plots located in Sector G-5 — both owned by the civic authority. These sites have been earmarked for upscale hospitality ventures that align with the capital’s broader development goals.
To accelerate progress, the CDA has been actively seeking investment partners. Among the recent discussions was a meeting with the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI), signaling potential collaboration to bring the hotel vision to life.
Hospitality Meets Diplomacy
The move reflects Islamabad’s growing role as a diplomatic and business hub, and the SCO summit presents a unique opportunity to showcase Pakistan’s readiness to host global events. With luxury hotels, a modernized Convention Centre, and improved infrastructure in the pipeline, the capital is positioning itself for a transformative leap in international hospitality and urban development.
