ISLAMABAD: The enduring friendship between Indonesia and Pakistan came alive at the Indonesian Expo 2025, inaugurated at Centaurus Mall to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The two-day event, organized by the Embassy of Indonesia, celebrates seven and a half decades of mutual trust, cultural ties, and cooperation. The Expo opened with a colorful ceremony attended by dignitaries, diplomats, business representatives, and the general public.

Ambassador highlights spirit of people-to-people connection

Ambassador Chandra W. Sukotjo, who formally inaugurated the Expo, said the decision to hold the event in a shopping mall reflected the people-centered spirit of Indonesia–Pakistan friendship. “Why hold it in a shopping mall? Because friendship should not stay inside closed halls. It should be celebrated with the people — right here, where families, youth, and communities gather,” he said.
He added that the Expo was “not about protocol, but about sharing joy, culture, and togetherness between Indonesians and Pakistanis.”

Mushahid Hussain recalls personal bond with Indonesia

The opening ceremony was graced by Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, former Chairman of the Senate, as the chief guest. In his address, he recalled his deep connection with Indonesia, saying, “Indonesia has a special place in my heart, as I spent memorable moments in Jakarta as the son of Pakistan’s first Defence Attaché to Indonesia.”
Wearing a traditional Batik shirt gifted by former Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Senator Mushahid also mentioned his earlier meeting with Prabowo Subianto, expressing his confidence even then that Prabowo would one day lead Indonesia.

Cultural harmony through music and performance

Adding to the evening’s cultural vibrancy, the Embassy’s Women Association, led by Madam Tamara Y. Sukotjo, performed the traditional bamboo instrument Angklung, enchanting the audience with renditions of “I Have a Dream” and “Dil Dil Pakistan.”
The artistic highlight of the event was a lively performance by Paguyuban Citra, a renowned Indonesian cultural troupe brought in specially for the Expo. Their colorful presentation of traditional songs and dances, including Lenggang Jakarta, received prolonged applause. The moment became even more memorable when Pakistani dancers joined the Indonesian performers, symbolizing cultural harmony and brotherhood.

Indonesian Expo 2025 reflects 75 years of shared values

Ambassador Sukotjo said the Expo represents the essence of the 75-year bond between the two countries — one based on people-to-people connections, mutual respect, and shared aspirations for peace and progress.
