According to Indian media, Deep Bordoloi, also known as Jalmal Bordoloi, hailing from Rahdhala village in Nagaon district, has transformed his salon into a unique community space by adding a library. A well-educated young man, Deep envisioned self-reliance by running his own shop.

Deep Kumar Bordoloi, the salon owner, shared, “I love reading books. When I started this salon in 2016, there weren’t many salons in our area. I didn’t like seeing people sitting idle while waiting for their turn. That’s when the idea struck me to keep some books here so customers could read while waiting, avoiding boredom. Plus, when there are no customers, I enjoy reading myself.”

He also highlighted that books are expensive these days, and many locals cannot afford them. His salon offers a solution by providing free access to books for anyone who visits.

The initiative has been warmly received, especially by the youth, who often immerse themselves in reading while waiting for their turn. A local student, Pranab Deka, said, “We regularly come here, and whenever we wait for our turn, we read books.”

Another customer, a regular for several years, appreciated the idea, saying, “Bordoloi’s step is commendable. This salon feels like a library to us. We used to have a public library in our village, but it didn’t have many books. Whenever I see a long queue here, I pick up something to read.”
