Islamabad — Barrister Salman Safdar, appointed by the Supreme Court as a friend of the court, met Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan at Adiala Jail on Tuesday and told reporters afterward that the jailed leader was in good health.

Safdar held the meeting at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023. The visit was conducted under court orders, and a detailed report on Khan’s health and prison facilities is expected to be submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday.

According to court proceedings, the meeting lasted approximately three hours. Speaking briefly to journalists outside the jail, Safdar confirmed that he had been granted full access in line with the court’s directions and said Khan’s condition was satisfactory. He declined to share further details, saying it would be inappropriate to comment before filing his written report with the court.

The Supreme Court had appointed Safdar as a judicial representative during hearings on appeals related to the Toshakhana criminal case. A two-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, directed that Safdar be allowed to inspect Khan’s barracks and related facilities to prepare a comprehensive assessment.

The court also sought a separate report from the jail superintendent regarding Khan’s treatment, health condition, and the facilities available to him in custody. During the hearing, the chief justice instructed Safdar to meet the PTI founder and submit his findings the following day, after which the bench would review the matter. The case was adjourned until February 12.

Safdar later confirmed that jail authorities had cooperated fully during the visit. Sources said the report will cover Khan’s health status, prison conditions, and access to facilities.

The court’s directive followed its decision to decline an earlier request for an immediate meeting with Khan without prior notice to the government. That application had been filed by PTI senior leader Latif Khosa, after which the court issued notice to the government on visitation-related issues.

Imran Khan was removed from office through a no-confidence vote in April 2022 and has since faced multiple cases, including corruption and terrorism-related charges. Weeks earlier, he was briefly shifted from Adiala Jail to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for an eye procedure, which officials said lasted around 20 minutes.

Separately, PTI recently submitted a memorandum to the Supreme Court registrar seeking expanded visitation rights for Khan, including meetings with family members, doctors, lawyers, and friends, while raising concerns about his medical care in detention.
