ISLAMABAD — Islamabad Medical & Dental College (IMDC), in collaboration with Dr. Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital (ANTH), organized a Scientific Model Competition and Seminar on Entrepreneurship in Laboratory Sciences on December 30, 2025.
Students present scientific models
Students from the Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program presented models focusing on laboratory automation, diagnostic innovations, and healthcare research. The models were evaluated by a panel of judges including Prof. Humayoon Shafique Satti of the National University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Massab Umair of the National Institute of Health, and Dr. Zaineb Akram of the National University of Medical Sciences.
Visit to BA/BE lab and clinical trials unit
Following the seminar, Prof. Dr. Rizwan Uppal, Founding Chairman of Islamabad Diagnostic Centre, visited the BA/BE Lab (Bioavailability and Bioequivalence) and the Clinical Trials Unit. The BA/BE Lab was noted as the third facility of its kind in Pakistan, marking a development in clinical research infrastructure.
Faculty and industry perspectives
Dr. Usman Waheed, Associate Professor and Principal of IMDC, emphasized integrating innovation, skill‑based training, and entrepreneurship into laboratory education. Dr. Usman Tareen, Assistant Professor and Incharge of the Bioequivalence Lab at ANTH, encouraged students to pursue research‑oriented careers in areas such as molecular diagnostics and digital laboratory systems.
Mr. Shahan Irshad, Country Head of Sind Medical Stores, shared plans for establishing a Training Lab and Display Centre at IMDC, focusing on advanced molecular technologies including next‑generation sequencing (NGS).
Conclusion of the event
The event concluded with prize distribution and certificate awards. Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Prof. Muhammad Aslam, Vice Chancellor, delivered a vote of thanks and noted the institution’s commitment to strengthening entrepreneurship, research culture, and industry–academia collaboration in laboratory sciences.
