Regular exercise benefits overall health and may also help protect against type 2 diabetes. A medical study conducted in Italy found that 30 minutes of daily aerobic exercise can improve blood glucose levels and insulin sensitivity.
The research, conducted by the Centro per le Malattie Endocrine e Metaboliche, examined the effects of aerobic exercise on blood glucose and insulin sensitivity.
The study involved 32 people aged between 20 and 35. All participants were free of diabetes and were not taking any medications.
Researchers first conducted glucose tests on the participants before asking them to perform light jogging.
Another glucose test was carried out 24 hours after exercise, along with an assessment of insulin levels.
30 Minutes of Exercise Showed Immediate Benefits
The findings showed that 30 minutes of aerobic exercise improved blood glucose levels immediately and increased insulin sensitivity.
Researchers said these effects may help reduce the long-term risk of developing type 2 diabetes when physical activity becomes a regular part of a person’s routine.
Previous research has also indicated that physical activity can improve glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity over the long term. However, this study specifically examined the immediate effects of exercise.
According to the researchers, blood glucose levels remained lower and insulin sensitivity remained improved for up to 24 hours after exercise, suggesting that regular physical activity could play an important role in diabetes prevention.
The findings were published in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation.
