How many Senate votes do Democrats need to remove Trump from office?

WASHINGTON, November 5, 2026: Democrats would need at least 67 votes in the US Senate to remove President Donald Trump from office through impeachment proceedings if all 100 senators participate in the vote, as the constitutional requirement for conviction remains a two-thirds majority.

Based on the 54 Senate seats reported for Democrats following the November 3 midterm elections, the party would need support from at least 13 additional senators to reach the threshold required for Trump’s removal.

However, securing a Senate majority does not automatically give Democrats the power to remove a sitting president. The US Constitution establishes separate procedures for impeachment and conviction, with different responsibilities assigned to the House of Representatives and the Senate.

How many votes are required to remove a US president?

The US Senate has 100 members, and the Constitution requires a two-thirds majority of senators present to convict a president following impeachment.

If all senators are present, at least 67 must vote in favour of conviction. Under the reported 54-seat scenario, Democrats would therefore need another 13 votes to secure Trump’s removal, assuming all 54 supported conviction.

The calculation could change if fewer senators participate, because the constitutional threshold is based on those present rather than the Senate’s full membership in every circumstance.

How does presidential impeachment work?

The impeachment process begins in the House of Representatives, where a simple majority is required to approve articles of impeachment against a president.

Once the House approves the charges, the Senate conducts a trial to determine whether the president should be convicted.

A president is not automatically removed upon impeachment. Removal requires a separate Senate conviction supported by the constitutionally mandated two-thirds majority.

This distinction means that even if Democrats secure control of the House, they would still need sufficient support in the Senate to remove Trump.

What do the midterm results mean for Trump?

Democratic gains in Congress could strengthen the party’s ability to investigate the administration, scrutinise government decisions and potentially initiate impeachment proceedings if it controls the House.

However, congressional election victories alone do not establish grounds for impeachment or guarantee the votes needed for a Senate conviction.

Newly elected members of Congress are also due to take office in January 2027, meaning the November election results do not immediately alter the composition of the sitting Senate.

The central constitutional requirement remains unchanged: impeachment can be approved by a simple majority in the House, but removing a president requires a two-thirds vote among senators present for the trial.
