Higher Education Commission Pakistan chairperson calls for stronger global collaboration

ISLAMABAD: A dinner reception was hosted at the Islamabad Club in honour of the newly elected Chairperson of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, bringing together diplomats, university leaders and heads of academic institutions from across the country.

Ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from various countries attended the event, along with vice chancellors and representatives of higher education institutions and organizations. Participants described the gathering as a reflection of Pakistan’s expanding international engagement in the higher education sector.

Addressing the audience, Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar emphasized the need for effective collaboration with global partners to align Pakistan’s higher education system with international standards. He highlighted plans to introduce reforms focused on innovation and Artificial Intelligence (AI), aiming to strengthen research, teaching and institutional capacity.

Ensuring quality education will remain a central priority, he said, adding that faculty development, infrastructure improvement and research enhancement are key areas of focus.

The chairperson stated that Pakistani graduates should be equipped with skills and opportunities enabling them to compete internationally. He also underscored the importance of globally recognized degrees and academic standards.

Prof Akhtar thanked partner countries for offering scholarships to Pakistani students, noting that international academic cooperation plays a vital role in expanding opportunities and exposure.

On the occasion, he formally launched the 6th Students Convention, scheduled to be held in Islamabad in the first week of May 2026. He appreciated the organizers for their efforts in promoting academic dialogue and student engagement.

The event concluded with participants expressing support for the new HEC leadership and reaffirming their commitment to collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s higher education landscape.
