HEC Chairman, MoFEPT Secretary Applaud Virtual University’s Digital Education Model

ISLAMABAD — The Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and the Secretary of the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training (MoFEPT), Nadeem Mahbub, visited the Head Office of the Virtual University of Pakistan (VUP) in Islamabad on December 29, 2025.

Meeting with university officials

The delegation was received by Rector Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood and senior management. A high‑level meeting was held at the VU Head Office, attended by the Registrar, Dean, Directors of Quality Enhancement, ORIC, Campuses, and Heads of Departments. Other officials joined online from their respective campuses.

Review of operations and infrastructure

During the meeting, the Registrar briefed the visitors on the university’s operations, including its ICT‑based infrastructure and nationwide outreach. VU currently operates more than 200 campuses across Pakistan, serving over 170,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs under five faculties.

Data centre and MOOCs presentation

Director ICT, Ehsan Zafar Puri, presented the newly developed VU‑owned Data Centre, explaining its role in enhancing ICT capabilities and student facilitation. Dr. Baber Ali, General Manager VUTV, briefed the delegation on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) developed by the university, including courses prepared for HEC for nationwide use.

Focus on open and distance learning

Rector Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood highlighted the university’s strengths in open and distance learning (ODL), particularly its asynchronous teaching model. He noted that this mode of education has provided affordable and accessible higher education across Pakistan and emphasized the need to further strengthen it.

The visit concluded with an agreement to continue collaboration between HEC, MoFEPT, and the Virtual University to advance technology‑driven higher education in Pakistan.
