Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, bringing an end to her leadership across all formats.

In a message shared on social media, Kaur said leaving the captaincy was not an easy decision, describing it as a role filled with years of memories, emotions, sacrifices and important moments.

She also acknowledged that she had often put her personal performance, development and individual ambitions aside while leading the national team.

Kaur leaves the captaincy with an impressive record. Under her leadership, India won the 2025 World Cup, the 2026 Asia Cup and two consecutive gold medals at the Asian Games.

During her tenure, India also achieved several historic milestones. The team recorded its first-ever Test victory over Australia and won a bilateral series in England for the first time since 1999.

Her departure marks the beginning of a new chapter for Indian women’s cricket, with Smriti Mandhana emerging as the leading candidate to take over the captaincy.

Kaur’s tenure will be remembered for major international successes and several landmark achievements that helped strengthen India’s position in women’s cricket.
