KARACHI: Hamdard University launched a pictorial book titled A Legacy of Wisdom: Madinat al-Hikmah, a City of Learning and Culture, documenting the life, vision and educational contributions of Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, at a ceremony held in Karachi on October 22.
The book was formally unveiled by Hamdard University Chancellor Sadia Rashid, chief guest Javed Jabbar, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Imran Amin and former Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Syed Shabib-ul-Hasan. Prominent personalities from academic, literary and social circles attended the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Javed Jabbar paid tribute to Hakim Mohammed Said’s services to education and appreciated Sadia Rashid’s efforts to preserve and expand her father’s legacy over the past 28 years.
He described the publication as a valuable account of Madinat al-Hikmah’s history and intellectual development, emphasising that universities should encourage independent thinking, research, dialogue and freedom of expression.
Sadia Rashid said the book reflected her father’s lifelong mission to promote education and public welfare. Recalling the establishment of Madinat al-Hikmah, she said Hakim Mohammed Said had envisioned a thriving educational centre on what was once barren land.
She expressed hope that the publication would inspire younger generations to pursue knowledge and contribute positively to society.
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Imran Amin said the transformation of more than 300 acres of barren land near the Hub River into an educational and research centre demonstrated Hakim Mohammed Said’s commitment to learning and service to humanity.
Renowned scientist Dr Atta-ur-Rahman highlighted the importance of education, research and skilled human resources in national development, describing Madinat al-Hikmah as an enduring example of educational vision.
Former Karachi Commissioner Shafiq-ur-Rehman Paracha, Mehtab Akbar Rashdi and Navaid-ul-Zafar also paid tribute to Hakim Mohammed Said’s contributions.
In recorded messages, his granddaughters Dr Mahum Munir Ahmed and Amena Humayoun Mian appreciated the initiative to preserve his intellectual and educational legacy for future generations.
