TAXILA: Jamaat-e-Islami’s public action committee has raised alarm over the deteriorating condition of GT Road Wah Cantt–Taxila–Hasan Abdal, warning that frequent accidents are claiming lives on a daily basis.

Committee head Naeem Ashraf said the road has become increasingly hazardous, with reports of nearly three accidents occurring each day. He described the situation as a “killing field,” noting that families are routinely losing loved ones due to unsafe conditions.

Ashraf urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir to take immediate notice and prioritize repair work on the busy route. He cited poor road infrastructure, excessive traffic, irregular U-turns, and inadequate oversight by the National Highway Authority (NHA) as major causes of accidents. He also criticized the NHA for failing to regulate truck speeds.

The public action committee, which includes more than 50 organizations, announced plans to stage protests if work does not begin during Ramadan. A larger demonstration involving chambers of commerce, traders’ associations, and civil society groups is being planned after Eid if authorities fail to act.

Ashraf appealed to the government and military leadership to urgently address the issue, stressing that timely intervention is necessary to save lives and restore public confidence in road safety.
