KARACHI: The All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has announced a 5% increase in freight transport fares following continued increases in petroleum product prices.
Alliance President Malik Shahzad Awan condemned the rise in fuel prices, saying higher fuel costs were putting additional pressure on the goods transportation sector.
He said the alliance had decided to increase freight rates by 5%, while criticizing what he described as frequent changes in petroleum prices.
Nationwide Strike Decision Expected Next Week
Awan said the alliance had postponed a countrywide strike for 40 days following assurances from the government.
According to him, the 40-day period requested by the government will expire next week. He said the alliance would announce its future course of action once the deadline had passed.
The transporters’ decision to raise freight rates could increase transportation costs for businesses and potentially add pressure to the prices of goods moved across the country.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a march towards Islamabad on September 20 against the petroleum levy.
