ADDIS ABABA — Guangzhou Automobile Group has launched four electric vehicle models in Ethiopia, marking its entry into the country’s growing EV market and expanding its presence in East Africa.
The models were introduced at the opening of the company’s flagship GAC JUNTU showroom in Addis Ababa, as demand for environmentally friendly transport solutions increases amid government efforts to promote green mobility.
Company officials said Ethiopia’s push toward a low-carbon economy and investment in infrastructure created favourable conditions for the introduction of electric vehicles.
Government push for e-mobility
Ethiopian authorities have been encouraging a transition toward electric mobility to reduce emissions and modernise the transport sector.
Alemu Sime said the government is working to build an environmentally sustainable and economically resilient transport system, adding that partnerships with manufacturers will support this shift.
He also highlighted the importance of after-sales services, including maintenance support, spare parts availability and trained technicians, to strengthen consumer confidence in electric vehicles.
Investment and market expansion
Officials noted that Ethiopia aims to position itself as a regional hub for automotive manufacturing and assembly, supported by access to energy resources, a growing workforce and regional trade opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The newly opened 2,300-square-metre GAC JUNTU showroom will offer sales and after-sales services, including test drives and customer support facilities.
Services and future plans
The company said the new EV models are now available through its local dealer network, with plans to introduce mobile applications in the future to allow users to manage vehicle functions remotely.
The launch reflects broader expansion of electric vehicle adoption in Africa, as governments and companies invest in cleaner transport technologies and supporting infrastructure.
