FRANKFURT — The city of Frankfurt has illuminated parts of its centre to mark the holy month of Ramadan for the first time, in a symbolic gesture recognising its Muslim community.

Decorative lights featuring Ramadan-themed designs were switched on in prominent public areas, drawing residents and visitors to the city centre. Local authorities described the initiative as a sign of inclusion and coexistence in one of Germany’s most diverse metropolitan areas.

Frankfurt is home to a sizeable Muslim population, including families with roots in Turkey, North Africa and South Asia. Community representatives welcomed the move, calling it a meaningful acknowledgment of the city’s cultural diversity.

City officials said the lighting display was intended to promote mutual respect and strengthen social cohesion. Similar Ramadan illuminations have been introduced in other European cities in recent years as part of broader efforts to reflect religious and cultural diversity in public spaces.

Ramadan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer and reflection, concluding with the festival of Eid al-Fitr.

The lighting in Frankfurt marked a milestone moment for the city, reflecting changing civic approaches toward multicultural recognition in Germany.
