Pakistan’s newly appointed T20I captain Sahibzada Farhan has said that star batters Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan could return to the national T20 side at any time, expressing confidence in both players and the current squad ahead of the series against Sri Lanka.
Speaking at a pre-series press conference in Rawalpindi, Farhan described his appointment as Pakistan captain for the first time as an honour. He said he was optimistic about his own performance and that of the team.
Farhan admitted that he had never imagined becoming Pakistan’s captain, although his father had always predicted that he would one day lead the national side. He said the experience had strengthened his belief in the power of parents’ prayers.
The captain acknowledged that leadership brings additional pressure but said he would strive to lead by example through his performances and send a positive message to his teammates.
He also praised former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, saying he had been greatly influenced by his leadership.
Discussing the team’s approach, Farhan stressed the need for Pakistan to play fearless cricket. He expressed a desire for the top order to adopt a modern T20 batting mindset and meet the demands of the contemporary format.
Regarding Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, Farhan described both as among the world’s best players and said they could make a comeback to T20 cricket at any time. He added that he had full confidence in the current squad.
Asked about team selection, Farhan said assembling the squad was the selection committee’s responsibility. He had been given a 15-member squad for the Sri Lanka series but acknowledged that, as captain, he had limited prior information about the selected players.
Farhan also highlighted the importance of making the most of upcoming opportunities, noting that Pakistan would have fewer T20 matches after the Sri Lanka series.
He said he was not concerned about whether he would retain the captaincy in the future, adding that his focus remained on his current responsibilities.
Reflecting on playing at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Farhan said he had always enjoyed playing at the venue. He added that his career had taught him to overcome difficulties and that he was ready to face the challenges ahead
