A delegation of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) called on Deputy Commissioner Saleem Jan Marwat in Swat to review the current situation of the agriculture and livestock sectors, assess challenges faced by local farmers, and discuss ongoing support measures in the district.
The delegation was led by Ms Kiyal Akmatbek, Head of Office FAO Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and included Community Specialist Ms Afsheen, Crop Specialist Mr Asghar Khan, and other team members. The meeting was also attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Finance and Planning) Syed Nouman Ali Shah and officials from the Agriculture and Livestock Departments.
During the briefing, the deputy commissioner informed the FAO team about damage caused by recent floods, relief and facilitation initiatives for affected communities, and steps being taken by the district administration to support farmers and livestock holders. He also highlighted Swat’s agricultural potential, particularly in saffron cultivation, olive orchards, ginger, and other high-value crops.
Officials from the Agriculture and Livestock Departments shared details of sector-specific challenges, including climate-related risks, infrastructure constraints, and the need for sustainable farming practices. The FAO delegation reviewed existing interventions and discussed possible areas of technical and community-level support.
Both sides emphasized the importance of continued coordination to promote sustainable agricultural development, strengthen rural livelihoods, and enhance resilience against natural disasters in the district.
