Islamabad: Engineer Ali Mirza has claimed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan is not being subjected to torture, solitary confinement, or inhumane conditions in Adiala Jail, contradicting narratives repeatedly advanced by the party at domestic and international forums.
Podcast remarks dismiss allegations of mistreatment
Speaking during a podcast with senior journalist Irshad Bhatti, Engineer Ali Mirza stated that claims of mistreatment were inconsistent with the actual conditions of detention, as described by individuals with direct knowledge of the jail environment.
Engineer Ali Mirza highlights facilities beyond ordinary inmates
According to Engineer Ali Mirza, Imran Khan is receiving facilities far exceeding those available to ordinary inmates. He asserted that the former prime minister is not held in isolation and does not face any form of physical or psychological abuse.
Detailing the conditions, Engineer Ali Mirza said that Imran Khan is accommodated in a space equivalent to nine jail cells, enjoys daily outdoor access and exposure to sunlight, and has a personal caretaker assigned exclusively for his needs.
He further stated that Imran Khan is provided meals of his own choice, prepared separately rather than standard prison food, and has uninterrupted access to television and daily newspapers.
Engineer Ali Mirza emphasized that, under accepted legal and prison standards, these conditions do not qualify as solitary confinement or inhumane detention.
Significance of remarks within PTI-friendly media space
Importantly, the disclosures were made on a platform hosted by Irshad Bhatti, a journalist widely regarded as sympathetic to PTI, lending significance to the claims within the party’s own media ecosystem.
Analysts note that the statements undermine PTI’s long-standing assertions of ill-treatment, which have been repeatedly highlighted outside Adiala Jail during weekly protests and referenced in communications with international organizations and human rights bodies.
Engineer Ali Mirza further suggested that the gap between PTI’s public narrative and the disclosed facts could weaken ongoing international advocacy campaigns portraying Imran Khan as a political prisoner facing abuse.
The podcast discussion also addressed claims circulating regarding the detention conditions of Imran Khan’s wife, with Engineer Ali Mirza stating that similar exaggerations were being made without factual basis.
PTI has not issued an official response to the remarks at the time of filing this report.
