ISLAMABAD: Electricity prices in Pakistan could face another upward adjustment from January 1, 2027, as rising power purchase costs threaten to increase the financial burden on households and businesses.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has projected electricity purchase costs at Rs27.309 per unit for 2027, raising the prospect of higher consumer tariffs under the upcoming price review.

According to the agency’s estimates, the total cost of purchasing electricity is expected to reach Rs3.55 trillion, a major expense that will be considered in determining electricity rates for consumers served by power distribution companies.

The projections come amid continuing concerns over electricity affordability, with any further tariff increase likely to add pressure on household budgets and operating costs for businesses.

The revised electricity pricing framework is expected to take effect from January 1, 2027, following the regulatory review process.

Although the projected Rs27.31 per unit reflects the cost of electricity procurement rather than a final approved consumer tariff, the estimates point to potential upward pressure on electricity bills.

The final impact on consumers will depend on the tariff determination process and the additional costs and charges incorporated into electricity rates.
