Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan called on the international community and football authorities to support the Palestinian people after his side reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a victory over Australia.

Speaking after Egypt defeated Australia in a penalty shootout, Hassan expressed concern over the humanitarian situation facing Palestinians and urged global institutions to use football as a platform to promote human dignity and peace.

Following the win, Hassan was seen carrying a Palestinian flag on the pitch as Egypt celebrated its place in the knockout stage.

In his pre-match press conference, the former Egypt international said that failing to recognize the suffering of the Palestinian people was deeply troubling from a humanitarian perspective.

He also urged FIFA, football players and the international media to use the sport to deliver positive messages and raise awareness.

Hassan said the world should unite in calling for Palestinians to have the right to live freely and with dignity.

Egypt will next face defending champions Argentina in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
