Du Plessis makes bold move, opts out of IPL auction for exciting PSL stint

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has decided to withdraw from the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, choosing instead to feature in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL). The IPL auction is scheduled for Dec. 16 in Abu Dhabi.

Veteran batter ends long-running IPL stint

Du Plessis, 41, was released by Delhi Capitals earlier this month after scoring 202 runs in nine matches last season at a strike rate of 123.92. Over the years, he represented multiple IPL franchises, including Chennai Super Kings from 2011 to 2015 and again between 2018 and 2021, the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he served as captain from 2022 to 2024. Delhi later acquired him at a base price of 20 million rupees ($220,000).

Du Plessis opts out of IPL auctions after 14 seasons

Announcing his decision on social media, du Plessis said stepping away from the IPL auction was difficult but came with “gratitude” for his journey.
“I’ve had the privilege of sharing dressing rooms with exceptional players, representing remarkable franchises, and playing in front of incredibly passionate fans,” he wrote.
He added that his time in India gave him lasting friendships and experiences that shaped him both professionally and personally.

Focus shifts to a new challenge in the PSL

Looking ahead, du Plessis said he is eager to test himself in a different league and environment. He confirmed that while he is joining the PSL this season, he is not closing the door on a future IPL return.
“India holds a special place in my heart, and this isn’t goodbye. You’ll see me again,” he said.
The former Proteas captain noted he was excited for “a new country, a new environment, a new challenge,” adding that he looks forward to Pakistani hospitality.

Previous PSL experience adds depth to move

Du Plessis is not new to the PSL, having previously turned out for Peshawar Zalmi in 2019 and Quetta Gladiators in 2020.
