MARDAN (Fazal Haq): Commissioner Mardan Division, Nisar Ahmad, has directed all departments to speed up actions against drug abuse in Mardan. He ordered strict measures against drug dealers and smugglers, along with stronger rehabilitation and awareness campaigns to safeguard vulnerable youth and communities.
The directives came during a review meeting at the Commissioner’s Office. Officials from the Excise and Narcotics Control Department, Social Welfare Department, and Prosecution Department briefed him on progress under the provincial action plan. The meeting also discussed challenges faced by law enforcement and the need for consistent coordination among institutions.
Excise officials shared that they seized 6,118 kilograms of cannabis, 430 kilograms of heroin, 314 kilograms of opium, and 38 kilograms of methamphetamine (ice) in Mardan Circle since 2023. Police registered 387 FIRs, while officers confiscated 100 non-custom paid vehicles linked to smuggling. They noted that smuggling routes through remote areas remain a serious concern for security officials.
District Officer Social Welfare, Muhammad Shoaib, reported that more than 2,000 addicts received treatment at the Mardan Drug Rehabilitation Centre. He added that hundreds more were treated in Swabi. At present, 113 addicts are undergoing treatment in Mardan and 60 in Swabi. Rehabilitation programs now focus on counseling, vocational training, and long-term reintegration of patients into society.
A Prosecution Department representative shared details about convictions in drug-related cases. He underlined that consistent legal action strengthens the fight against drug abuse in Mardan and discourages repeat offenders from re-entering the drug trade.
Commissioner Nisar Ahmad appreciated the progress but stressed the need for close coordination. He instructed departments to plan awareness drives in universities and colleges, focusing on students. The commissioner said that public awareness is as important as law enforcement because youth remain the most vulnerable group.
He emphasized that a long-term strategy must combine enforcement, treatment, and community involvement. Local communities, teachers, and families will play a critical role in discouraging drug use among young people. By building awareness, offering rehabilitation, and cutting supply chains, officials aim to create a safer Mardan for future generations.
