Dr. Muhammad Tariq Delivers Lecture on Ethical Considerations in Research at University of Swat

SWAT: Director ORIC, Dr. Muhammad Tariq delivered a lecture on the topic “Ethical considerations in research” in the Department of Media and communications studies, University of Swat.
The guest speaker emphasized that naivete from research ethics is unethical in itself as research is a process of life long accountability.
In this regard, he stressed the importance of seeking proper permissions for the conduct of studies such Institutional review board (IRB) permissions as well as permissions from journals for accessing their copyrighted material needs to be sought in order to conduct research in an ethical manner. He emphasized that Research Conflicts of Research Needs to be declared (personal, commercial, political, academic or financial) if any should be declared at the outset of research conduct or as soon as they become evident in light of the Committee on Publications Guidelines (COPE).
He informed the students that according to APA Guide the piecemeal publications also called salami slicing is not allowed although some scholars say that it creates double work.
Furthermore, issues related to informed consent, use of pseudonyms, recording of interviews related ethical procedures and measures to enhance trustworthiness of research were discussed in detail. Finally, the issues related to adherence to standards of reporting qualitative research SRQR and PRISMA were discussed to ensure that correct research standards are followed.
In the end, a Question and answer session was held wherein the faculty members of department and graduate scholars participated for clarification of their concepts. The Departmental Head, Dr. Jamal thanked Dr. Muhammad Tariq for sharing his expertise with scholars.
