Gateway to great Karakoram, district Shigar of Gilgit Baltistan covers an area of 8,500 square kilometer. Shigar valley at half an hour drive from Skardu having a vast agricultural land and several attractive tourist spots. Shigar’s River irrigates the fertile land and is abundant in fruits like grapes, peaches, pears, walnuts and apricots.
Shigar Fort which is about 400 years old has been restored and is being used as a heritage museum, is a great example of reuse of heritage structures in Pakistan. Amburiq Mosque is another example of heritage preservation. It was recognized with a UNESCO Award for heritage conservation in 2005.
Shigar region is an amazing natural landscape called as the “Snowy Desert”. It is the only place in the world where you can see dunes like a desert, but they are made of snow instead of sand!
This Shigar’s unique snowy desert is known as the Qutb Desert.
During the day, when the sunlight falls on the snow dunes, they shine like diamonds.
The temperature in the area drops to minus 20 degrees in winter, making it even more mysterious.
Allah Almighty has blessed Pakistan with the highest mountains, glaciers, and snowy deserts all at once. It is the only country in the world having such diverse scenes and weathers.
